Maintenance in preparation for a long ride - Don's thoughts.
Off the top of my head...
- check front fork seals
- accelerator cable, check for wear near the throttle. clean and oil the other cables. Throw some grease on the end of the speedo cable and the clutch cable.
- decoke the head, piston, while there check the valve guides and seats
- remove outer gear box cover, let all the water out clean everything and re grease. check the kick start spring and the two gear springs for rust.
- clutch plates, are they worn? black. do they smell bad?
- adjust primary chain
- check drive chain and sprockets for wear
- are the cush rubbers still spongy
- check brake pads, probably clean up with wet and dry
- tighten bolts, all the usual suspects
- quickly check none of the spokes are loose
- check front and back wheel bearings. Any side ways movement in the wheels?
- check the head stem bearings. put the bike on its center stand and standing in front grab the front wheel and check for forwards/backwards movement. Does the front end move smoothly from side to side? without any glitches in the middle?
- never hurts to empty and washout the petrol tank. drop the bottom of the carb and check for dirt/water other crap.
- make sure you have plenty of tread left on your tyres
- battery check levels.
- throw some grease behind the points
